Why should you avoid synthetic fragrances?

The word fragrance in the list of ingredients can include hundreds of ingredients, companies are not required to list each ingredient that makes up the fragrance they have for a given product. "Most or all of them are synthetic. Symptoms reported to the FDA have included headaches, dizziness, rashes, skin discoloration, violent coughing and vomiting, and allergic skin irritation. Clinical observations by medical doctors have shown that exposure to fragrances can affect the central nervous system, causing depression, hyperactivity, irritability, inability to cope, and other behavioral changes." (Home Safe Home, Debra Lynn Dadd).
In 1989 the US National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health evaluated 2,983 fragrance chemicals for health effects. They identified 884 of them as toxic substances. The US Environmental Protection Agency found that 100% of perfumes contain toluene, which can cause liver, kidney and brain damage as well as damage to a developing fetus.
It is very important to note that there is currently no regulation of the phrases "essential oils" or "natural fragrance." Manufacturers are free to identify synthetic fragrance as an essential oil or natural fragrance, even "pure." If you have a reaction to a skin care product it is most likely the synthetic fragrance you are having a reaction to.
My advice is to avoid any skin care product with synthetic fragrances. Read the ingredients list and make sure that if there is a scent in the skin care product it is from a truly natural sources such as lavender, tea tree, geranium and much more. This is another great reason to use natural skin care products. Because our DNA has evolved over millions of years, every cell in our body is programmed to respond to the truly natural phytochemicals found in the real plants that we evolved alongside. When we breathe or ingest plant materials, our bodies recognize the molecules and know how to process them, safely. Unlike synthetic chemicals our bodies cannot recognize.
Avoiding exposure to chemicals will help in your overall wellness and get your body to the healthiest point it can be.
